A new therapeutic group for carers is to be offered by The Harbour, starting in early 2012. It will be free of charge, available to anyone who looks after someone who is ill, and will meet on a Wednesday once a week, in central Bristol

Chief Executive Caroline Hukins explains “We see a great many carers for individual counselling at The Harbour, and common to almost all of them is a feeling of isolation. Therapy in a group context enables participants to realise they are not alone, and indeed that they can gain and offer a great deal of support to others who are in a similar situation. This can be a great boost to self-esteem. A group like this gives carers some time to focus on themselves; and to express what is happening for them”.

Anyone interested in finding out more should call 0117 925 9348, or email info@the-harbour.co.uk.

The Harbour has been delighted to receive some significant donations in recent weeks: Firstly a fantastic £10,000 from the Caron Keating Foundation, which will enable us to offer 263 counselling sessions to clients affected by cancer in 2011.

We also recently received £2000 from the Souter Charitable Trust towards our work generally, and a donation of £2000 from the Denman Charitable Trust towards the cost of our new therapeutic group for people with breast cancer.

We are greatly appreciative of all these gifts, which enable The Harbour to continue its very valuable work with clients facing life threatening illnesses.

The Harbour is launching its Christmas Appeal to raise £5000.

* At this time of year when we are all planning Christmas Festivities what better time to make a donation to this vital service that enables people to talk and be heard without having to worry about anyone else. To provide emotional and psychological support away from the medical treatment that is being received elsewhere. To help people make sense and come to terms with a frightening and devastating situation.

* If we reach our £5000 target this will enable a counsellor or psychotherapist to provide 160 individual counselling sessions so please dig deep and help us to reach this target.

To make a donation to this appeal is easy and you can do this in two ways:

Visit our Just Giving Page at www.justgiving.com/the-harbour and click on ‘go to our fundraisers’ where you can access the Christmas Appeal Page

Click on the ‘Help Us’ page of this website which shows you how to donate.

Thank you and best wishes in the forthcoming festive season.

Bristol schoolgirl Savi Cox is raising money in an unusual way – she has done 2000 pogo jumps in aid of The Harbour.

Savi wanted to help when she heard that The Harbour is short of funds, as her mum works there. In the current economic climate it is harder and harder to raise enough money to keep on offering a free counselling service to clients.

Savi managed an amazing 1008 jumps in one burst, before her hands started bleeding! She took a break and then finished the rest. She has raised over £150 by asking her friends and teachers for sponsorship.

Mum Julie says ‘She knew we were struggling for funding and she wanted to help. I am really proud of her; it means a lot that she has done this.’

The Harbour offers free counselling to people with life threatening, physical illnesses, and their carers and family members, and people bereaved by illness. To donate or find out more, visit www.the-harbour.co.uk
